What are house flies?
House flies are a type of fly, and as their name suggests, are common household invaders. House flies are dull gray in color with two velvety stripes on their faces and four narrow stripes running down their thorax. House flies cannot consume solids. To feed, they regurgitate saliva onto the food they are consuming. They then use their specialized spongy mouthparts to suck up the now liquid food source. Their cream-colored larva (maggots) are greasy in appearance, are eyeless, and they taper from rear to head.
Are house flies dangerous?
House flies are dangerous pests. Before finding their way into your family's home, they were landing, feeding, and laying their eggs in things like trash, decaying organic materials, and animal excrement. House flies contaminate food, utensils, dishes, and the surfaces of homes with bacteria, parasites, and human pathogens.
Why do I have a house fly problem?
House flies are drawn to properties that offer easy access to their basic needs - food, water, and shelter. Open containers of garbage, compost piles, pet excrement, piles of grass or leaves, leaky outdoor fixtures, clogged gutters, and outdoor eating areas are also attractive to flies. Once on your property, it's only a matter of time before they find their way into your home. House flies get inside through open windows and doors, through torn screens, spaces in your home's foundation or exterior walls, or through vents or spaces found around utilities that enter your home through its exterior.
Where will I find house flies?
House flies are most often seen swarming around outdoor breeding and feeding sites. They can be a huge nuisance around garbage dumpsters, outdoor trash cans, picnic areas, in pastures, in garden areas, and around compost piles. Inside, house flies will be found where there is food, such as in kitchen and pantry areas. These pests are most active during the day, and rest at night, close to their food sources.
